Grab some grass to see if you have grubs. The simple test for grubs is this: in a few spots on your lawn, grab a handful of grass and tug. Grub-eaten turf will pull up like carpet. If yours does lift up, look for grubs on the underside of the grass you pull up. They're white c-shaped bugs, about a half inch long.
